Season 1, Day 12/30
Monet’s Rouen Cathedral series is not grandeur and permanence, but how the same truth appears different depending on light, context, and environment.
One Minute, One Masterpiece, One Modern Idea
Monet spent his life chasing fleeting light—painting water lilies over and over, haystacks dozens of times, and here, the Rouen Cathedral more than 30 times, at different hours, and in different weather. Monet did not paint a portrait of the stone, but rather the dance of the light and the constant shift of perspective.
Today, it is harder than ever to capture the truth. The same news story takes a different turn when viewed through a different outlet’s lens. The same tweet leaves a different sense when read at a different time of day. Varying the light, angle, or caption changes how a person appears. Filters everywhere. Context lost.
Monet knew: shift the light, shift the truth. The stone didn’t change—the light around it did. The same is true for people, for news, for everything we see. Before you judge what you’re seeing, check the light.
And that is why it matters.
To reflect: How does your mood change what you believe is true?
