Season 1, Day 14/30

Paul Cézanne’s Mont Sainte-Victoire series is not about the beauty of a mountain, but the struggle to find structure and meaning in a chaotic world.

One Minute, One Masterpiece, One Modern Idea

Cezanne painted his beloved hometown mountain in southern France over 80 times, exploring its form, structure, light, and color from different perspectives to reach its essence. Cézanne wasn’t interested in what the mountain looked like. He wanted to understand what it was—its essential form beneath the chaos. Over time, the paintings became more abstract. The mountain became triangles, cubes, spheres. He was breaking reality down to find the structure underneath.

Today, we are buried by a mountain of raw data and sensory overload all around us. How do we make sense of it all? Our brain simplifies, curates, organizes, and presents us with a view of the world. How close is that to reality?

Cezanne reminds us that clarity is not found, but built. Where are the solid shapes beneath the chaotic reality?

And that is why it matters.

To reflect: What structure helps you make sense of chaos rather than escape it?
