Season 1, Day 24/30

This artwork committed suicide. And became immortal.

One Minute, One Masterpiece, One Modern Idea

Anonymous British street artist, Banksy, painted several murals of an innocent girl losing her heart-shaped balloon across London. Free and accessible to all, speaking to our loss of innocence, hope, and dreams.

In 2018, Banksy put a version up for auction at the prestigious Sotheby’s auction house, but with a hidden mechanical shredder inside. Once the gavel hit, the artwork destroyed itself. A rebellion against the gatekeepers, inaccessibility, and pretentious nature of the art market.

The buyer still purchased the shredded piece and later resold it for millions more. Banksy tried to destroy his work the moment it was sold. The art world did not care.

Rebellion commodified.

Resistance captured.

Today, we try to rebel against the establishment, be real, authentic, and in the moment. But somehow, even that becomes content. The system absorbs everything – even the things meant to critique it. Street art becomes an auction item. Destruction becomes value. The balloon always floats away.

Hope may be flying away, but reach anyway.

And that is why it matters.

To reflect: Where has rebellion in your life become aesthetic rather than action?
