Season 1, Day 8/30
Edgar Degas’ “Ballet Class” is not about the thrill of the performance but the diligence of the rehearsal.
One Minute, One Masterpiece, One Modern Idea
Degas takes us inside the rehearsal room of the Paris Opera House. We see the ballerinas hard at work practicing their routines with their ballet master standing in the middle, watching. Degas was the painter of the ballet dancers, creating a multitude of works about them throughout his life. He was fascinated with the effort and hard labor it takes to achieve perfection and grace.
Today, we are mesmerized by the final product- the ballet, the movie, the viral TikTok. We are not aware of the unseen moments. We don’t see behind the scenes: the many hours of toil, failure, and dedication.
Degas reminds us that the unseen moments—the rehearsals, the failures, the repetition—are where the real magic happens.
And that is why it matters.
To reflect: What effort in your life goes unseen but shapes everything?
