Season 1, Day 9/30
Edward Hopper’s “Nighthawks” is not just the view of a New York diner at night; it is us: lonely in a fishbowl.
One Minute, One Masterpiece, One Modern Idea
Hopper takes us inside an urban diner at night. A man and a woman sit at the counter. There is a server and another man with his back to us. Clear windows expose the diner to the dark, desolate street outside.
In the modern age, we are increasingly exposed to the world through our screens and social media, but with no meaning or connection. We are being seen, but are we with anyone? Proximity does not equal connection. Where are the lasting friendships? We are isolated and lost in the modern urban landscape.
We sit close to each other but sealed in our own glass box. Hopper paints the glass wall. Let’s break it.
And that is why it matters.
To reflect: Where do you confuse proximity or communication with connection?
