Manet paints a barmaid, Suzon, surrounded by the spectacle of a Parisian nightclub, but she is completely alone.

One Minute, One Masterpiece, One Modern Idea

Manet invites us into the mirror of “A Bar at the Folies-Bergère,” which depicts a famous Paris nightclub. We’re face-to-face with a barmaid. Behind her, a mirror reflects the crowd. The perspective is rather distorted, and her expression is ambiguous and hard to read. Melancholy, bored, rebellious, isolated? We see what she sees reflected in the mirror while at the same time looking at her face. The reflection behind shows her serving a male customer, but look deeply into her eyes, and she is not quite there. Physically there, mentally distant and disconnected.

Today, we are more visible than ever — online, tagged, viewed, surrounded — and yet loneliness is everywhere. Proximity doesn’t guarantee connection. Being seen doesn’t mean being known and recognized.

Suzon’s public face and ours may be smiling, constantly “on”, and consumed by others. But privately? We are isolated and drained. The cost of performance.

And that is why it matters.
