Season 1, Day 19/30
Mark Rothko’s Seagram Murals are not just paintings of colors; they are the essence of feeling when the extraneous is removed.
One Minute, One Masterpiece, One Modern Idea
Dark red. Maroon. Black. Brown. Rothko’s massive rectangles shut you in. There are no images, no stories, no escape. Everything is stripped away. What remains is not a void; it is somber feeling and reflection.
Today, we are overwhelmed with the noise of content. We are bombarded by information, symbols, and notifications. We use the “noise” of our digital lives to avoid the silence of our inner lives.
We fear the quiet.
Rothko shuts off our notifications and presents us with a portal into silence and pure emotion.
And that is why it matters.
To reflect: What feeling might surface if you allowed yourself more silence?
