Season 1, Day 25/30
This is not what you think it is; it is simply the close-up of a black iris.
One Minute, One Masterpiece, One Modern Idea
Rich blacks, deep purples, subtle whites, velvety folds. Male critics framed it as sexual, as female anatomy. They saw what they expected to see. They projected their own assumptions. The artist, Georgia O’Keeffe, said no. You are actually inside a close-up of a black iris flower.
We project our own expectations, beliefs, and values onto all we encounter. Everything is seen through a constructed lens. We don’t consume information — we consume interpretations. People are not known — our assumptions about them are.
We don’t see reality — we frame it.We don’t discover meaning — we assign it.We don’t experience the world — we interpret it
O’Keeffe declares: “Nobody sees a flower, really – it is so small. We haven’t time.”
She slows us down to notice the small beauties we miss.
Stop projecting. Just look.
And that is why it matters.
To reflect: What assumption are you projecting onto reality?
